Klenine- What Is It We Do When We Write Articles Like This One- and How Can We Get Students To Join Us?

I. Summary

Klenine tells a story about walking into a library filled with students who he can tell are all writing research paper. He doesn't go up and directly look at what the students are working on however, he realizes what they are doing because they were not reading or writing at all. They were simply copying text from an encyclopedia and transferring that material into their own papers. He then came to the realization that he himself was about to sit down and do the exact same thing, but on a more sophisticated level. After seeing this Klenine decides that his best course of action was to figure out if people writing research papers only did this type of work at the library or do they try and discover things for their research paper on their own. Therefore he conducts an experiment where he talks to 8 professionals to find the answer to his question about people's methods of writing  research paper. He concludes that research truly is a form of writing, and what we write can be refined by learning by the methods of others.

II. Conversation
Klenine's article is something that I think we can all relate to. He places us in a crowded library and helps us visualize what exactly he is seeing so that we to can understand how he is thinking. This to me was a very genius way to write an research paper.

III. Assigned Exercises

1. Q: How does what Kleine is talking about line up with your own experiences? Does is sound like the way you write and research, or not?

A: Like Kleine, I have also seen many different ways in which people write research papers. Some people talk to professionals whose area of expertise is the topic that a student is writing about. I have seen people working in the library with large groups of people using encyclopedias, essentially transferring that information into their own papers much like Kleine observed. The most type of research I have seen and personally use is the internet as a tool to help gather information to write papers. Much like the people in Kleines' research I hunt for and gather information on the internet. So in some ways his research sounded like the way I write for my own research papers.

2. Q. At some moments Kleine's article is read almost like a story. Does it surprise you that a research article could be written as a narrative? Have you ever tried writing research in this fashion?

A: Yes, this surprised me very much. I have never seen a research paper done quite like this. The beginning of the paper was very interesting and kept me focused on the reading without boring me by simply listing off facts about research that he had done. This really made me want to try and use this style of research paper in my next paper. Not only did it keep me, the reader entertained, but it also presented the facts in a much more interesting way.

3. Q. How big of a role do sources play in the research of the professionals Kleine interviews? What role have they played in your past research efforts? How can you explain the difference?

A: Sources play a huge role in the research in Kleine's interviews. Interviewing 8 different professionals really validated his research. Without these interviews he would have no results.Without any results your experiment is invalid, thus making your research a waste of time. I have interviewed people on several different occasions last year working for my school news paper. Add big time names, along with quality interviews and you have yourself a very promising article in the making. Also for research papers in the past, it was important for me to interview someone that is prominent in their field and some who was willing to give you an honest and interesting interview. Papers where i have interviewed people/professionals have always been much more engaging and valid than papers with these interviews.

4.) Q. What would you change about how you do research if you did what Kleine talks about?

A: Instead of going to an internet site and finding all my information there I would go and talk to people who knew more about that topic then me. NOt only could they enlighten me on the topic I am researching but they can help point me in the direction of making a better article by having credible sources to go by, instead of just finding all of my information on the internet.

IIII. Reflection

I found Kleine's article very helpful in several ways. He not only talked about the process of writing a research paper, but he showed me a new way to write a research paper. It was an interesting article to read and it kept me interested the whole time because of his style of writing. Also i found the findings of his research very interesting. It surprised me that none of his subjects recall writing for another figure, but they do recall writing for their peers! Overall I enjoyed reading this article and certainly gained knowledge about different ways to collect information for a research paper.

Blog Post 2

In this article the author, Stuart Greene, explains the importance of people communicating through arguments. He argues that arguments are a very important way we as human interact with one another.

Greene quotes Kenneth Burke because every time you write an argument you have to have the same stance you perviously had on the subject or you invalidate the argument. Greene obviously finds this very important,  thus he quotes Burke again.

The extended metaphor Burke uses is setting the scene for the reader about walking into a parlor late while an ongoing argument is taking place. This shows that every argument you make is connected to a previous argument you had already taken part in.

Framing is a collection of stories that people rely on to understand and react to events. The underlying metaphor of framing is describing the perspective that you are basing your argument off of. This is important for Greene because everyone option is different and everyone has different prospectives than one another which can make an argument difficult depending on the situation. Framing however allows an author to manipulte what the reader is reading which is a very important skill to have in order to change the readers mindset on any given topic.

Greene is having a "conversation" with the readers reading the passage by trying to show the importance of arguing while also giving the readers examples of this topic. He is practicing what he preaches by using his own perspective on the importance of arguing to human beings.

All in all arguing challenges our mind to think on a different level. Learning how to argue the right way can be very beneficial  in getting a job, writing an influential paper, or could simply help you win an argument without creating tension between you and another person.

1.)Writing is simply one putting their own thoughts down on paper, or on to a computer. Writing as a way of communicating without using spoken words.

2.)Writing works when one uses proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to convey ones thoughts.

3.) Writing and I have a love-hate relationship. I love writing because I enjoy getting my thoughts out onto paper without speaking a word. On the other hand, I dislike writing because it can be very time consuming. Writing has been and will be around forever, in that respect i find writing to be an enjoyable experience when you can write about things that interest me.
